Piper Is Now Home!

Got Piper home and she is adjusting well. She may be small (3#s) but she's a package of dynamite for sure. She's sleeps a lot as a puppy her age would but when she's awake she's been all-out rowdy.

Doesn't seem to be afraid of a thing and loves to bark and growl while playing. I think she's going to turn out to be a great 'lil dawg.

Again we really appreciate Galla Creek Feist out of Pottsville, AR for us having the opportunity to get Piper.

Few more pics from the trip home from Arkansas.

Ouachita River Haven Weekend

We had the pleasure of stumbling on Ouachita River Haven Resort which is on the Ouachita River right outside of Sims, AR this last weekend. What a beautiful place.

Not only was this a great campground but honestly these were nicest folks we've ever stayed with. We will for sure be back! The campground is well run and well maintained. You'll receive friendly service and information with the host. We plan to make it a basecamp in October for some squirrel hunting.

They have canoes & kayaks for rent along with shuttle service. The fishing is great and this place would be hard to beat if you are looking for a scenic river getaway.

If you get the chance, make plans to stay and enjoy the weekend. You won't regret it.

Pics of Scrappy The Squirrel Dog

Here are a few pics of Scrappy. He was too young to hunt last season but he is treeing and just needs some "woods" time now to work on turning him into a great hunter.

We really look forward to getting him into the woods this season.

New Puppy Comes Home This Weekend

We get to run up to Arkansas this weekend and pick up our new pup from Galla Creek Feist. Very much looking forward to the drive. We plan to take our time heading up the slow way through the mountains. Keeping up daily with the Galla Creek Blog has built up quite a bit of anticipation on the new pup. Last night this 6 week old pup even treed a few squirrel. She barked them up real good on the tree and went after them something awesome when I shot them out to her. At least thats how it was in my dream, but hey I am somewhat given over to self-fulfilling prophecy anyways. Sure it will be that way after some age and boot time in the woods.

Here is a reminder pic:

I have been very impressed with Mrs. Betty at Galla Creek and the whole way they run things. They are great communicators, really nice folks with awesome advice. They keep you abreast of all the goings on around Galla Creek, how the pups are doing and post pics. Of course they have an excellent reputation in the squirrel dog/feist business.

Mrs. Betty's blog inspired me to create this one for myself. I don't post daily as I don't get to hunt/fish/shoot or play outdoors daily but I am sure over time this will become a decent blog. I  enjoy reading and seeing the pics daily on the blog. I love farm life and enjoy seeing everything from the tractor pics to the garden shots. I still see myself viewing the blog almost daily even after we have brought the pup home. Its just interesting to check in daily.

If I ain't mistaken I think Galla Creek still has a couple of male pups available. If interested, better get 'em while you can. As soon as the though starts crossing minds about the upcoming hunting season they will be gone.

I will get a sidebar link to their blog as soon as I take the time to figure out how to do that.

Cheaper Than Dirt - Not for me!

Some call it market price, others call it price gouging. I can tell you one thing, no matter what its called this Dallas area online dealer for guns and ammo is not for me. Ok, lets face it, I can sometimes be politically opinionated and this is one of those times. I have checked ammo prices almost every single day since "the crunch" happened and I keep up with supply daily.

Cheaper Than Dirt totally lost all my loyal business when they went off all half-cocked during the Sandy Hook tragedy. I don't know if you caught it but right after that happened all their guns were pulled off the web site. When you went to look at a specific gun you got the banner reading Cheaper Than Dirt Does Not Sell Guns. Well they did the day of the shooting! I don't have to agree with everyone, in fact I often gravitate toward people who have different opinions than I do and I can respect someone even if I don't agree with them. Cheaper Than Dirt though is just a cheap con.

Shortly after they took all their guns off the web site and the dust settled down a bit, guess what? Yup, Cheaper Than Dirt now sold guns. I am of the opinion they "ran for the hills" during a crisis and then realized someone else was going to keep selling those guns and they didn't want to miss out on the unprecedented gun sales that occurred shortly after that tragic incident. Pretty gutless in my opinion. I could have respected them if they would have taken them down and permanently adhered to their "Cheaper Than Dirt Does Not Sell Guns." Don't be a weenie Cheaper Than Dirt. Its ok to have convictions and stick to them but anyone paying attention to this joke of a business can easily see these guys are only playing the con game.

On to my gripe. I have seem almost constant price gouging on Cheaper Than Dirt for ammo. We are talking outrageous prices for some in-stock ammo. Are they maximizing profit or putting the screws to their once loyal customers? You decide. Look at some of the ridiculous prices they are coming out with. They know memories are short. I bet you half or more of the people in the US can't even tell you the name of the school that got shot up. Ammo is starting to come back and I promise you that I for one will continue to spread the word of this shyster group for now on.

I personally have talked with several people who have seen the same thing out of them and I am happy to report that almost everyone has commented the same, "... I will never do business with Cheaper Than Dirt again."

I will throw an at-a-boy out to Walmart and Academy though. It might still be fairly difficult to purchase 9mm and 22LR ammo from these two but at least when they have it in stock they are not charging one cent more for it than they were before the "crunch." Good going guys and I will remember your actions to even after all the ammo is back in stock.

I hope all of you reading this will consider passing Cheaper Than Dirt over in the future.

Thanks for thinking about it!

Piper Pic Updates

Mrs. Betty posted a few new pics of Piper. These were taken a day or two ago and as of today she is 5 weeks old. We're gonna make the trip up to pick her up, not this weekend but the next. Looks like a sweet lil girl and we can't wait to add her to the family.

Been a lot of fun to watch the Galla Creek Feist blog and it was what inspired me to start our own blog. I have found myself waiting with interest for the next Galla Creek blog. Not just to see more puppy pics but just to see what going on around Galla Creek.

Anyway, I'll stop the rambling and post the pics.

A Switch to Float Tubes

A switch to float tubes from our traditional kayak fishing has proved to be most beneficial. Always in the kayaks we had to paddle, throw our fly rods a few times and then pick back up the paddle to straighten the kayak out again. On windy days it was quite brutal.

No more of that! We may move around slowly in the float tubes but most fly fisherman ain't in too much of a hurry anyways, lol. What it does do is give us back our hands for fishing. Use of the flippers on the feet allow us to move around and position ourselves without the need for a paddle. This allows us to increase the amount of fly casting by 50% over what we were able to do in the kayaks.

Takes a little getting use to especially when you see snakes or turtles nearby but even that you get use to after a short while. Not for sure just yet how we will feel when we experience our first gator!

Here is a shot of Angelia in her tube on a recent trip to Martin Creek Lake:

Zastava Z5 Exceptional Accuracy

Posting a pic of my Zastava Z5 22LR and a couple target pics. This gun has turned out to be amazing. Not for sure if this is typical of a Z5. I mean I know they are considered very accurate guns along the lines of CZs but this thing outshoots all my fine shooting CZs. I also believe this is staying with the Anschutz and Coppers.

The gun is now consistently shooting 5 shot groups at 50 yards at 1/4" or less CTC with 6 different ammos.

Here is a pic of the gun and a couple target shots:

The Allee Family Announces Piper!

Well the Allee family announces the future arrival of our newest addition to the family. We've reserved a feist pup from Galla Creek Feist out of Arkansas. We get to pick her up in late August. Galla Creek raises Mountain Feist pups bred for squirrel hunting and they have an excellent reputation in the business.

We are not for sure what Mrs. Betty and family have named her but we are going to call her Piper.

Couple of pics of the pup and Mrs. Bettys granddaughter holding the pups for pics:

If you are interested in acquiring a pup for squirrel hunting, click on the above link for Galla Feist and give Mrs. Betty a call. Really nice and helpful folks. They had two males left at the time of this posting.
